BIOL 1201 Chapter : Exam One Notes
Document Summary
Science: studying the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. What do scientists do: make observations, attempt to find patterns, assume that the future/present is like the past. Observations: require direct/indirect experience, ex: do animals have souls, we don"t scientifically know because our technology limits us, and we cannot physically observe souls. Science is a box bounded by the ability to make observations, but technology drives science because it changes the way we make. Theory: tested hypothesis supported by scientists with models. Law: theory tested and supported 100: no exceptions in physics with few exceptions in biology. Life is defined by the characteristics of living systems. Polarity is determined by the bonds within the molecules and how atoms interact. Atom: smallest matter unit that retains all properties of that element. Number of electrons needed to gain/lose in order to fill outermost electron shell. Predicts the number of bonds that the atom will form.
