BIOL 1002 Chapter : CH 25 STUDENT OUTLINE FALL 2009 2
Document Summary
Two ideas of evolution: change over time of generation composition of population, descent of modern organism with modification from pre-existing organism. Accumulation of inherited characteristics that enhance organisms ability to survive in specific environments. Arnold schwarzenegger modified his body, but was not passed to children: both ideas are wrong obviously. Natural selection: unequal survival and reproduction of organisms due to environmental forces, resulting in preservation of favorable adaptations, selects what is already available in gene pool, new characteristics are not created on demand, trait was pre-existing. Ex: 100m dash how can we change this race to reflect the process of natural selection: execute those lagging behind, reward winners (allow the fastest to reproduce; genes are carried on) Two important parts of natural selection: survive, reproduce. Artificial selection: selective breeding of organisms to encourage the occurrence of desirable traits, analogous to natural selection, ex: dog breeding; wild mustard plants.
