Bach: not known as great composer when he died, zelter; early lied composer, discovered st. matthew passion manuscript, showed it to mendelsohn and pretty much overnight bach became very well known. In 1850: bach society created, made complete edition of all of bach"s works, was not finished until 1899. In 1950, new bach edition is created and is still not finished. Is fugue in 3rd movement rather than ritornello form. Durch adams fall: through adam"s fall , accompaniment makes tune difficult to hear, text painting, snake in left hand, fall descending bass line. Passion: written for vespers service before good friday, nearly two hours, basically the same as an oratorio, just longer. In style, very similar to bach cantatas: difference: they tell the story of the crucifixion, it is basically an oratorio, just with a special topic, just like an oratorio, it has a narrator.
