Document Summary

Soil contains millions of living things (microbes) Controls - things that influence types of weathering. Mechanical forces act on the materials rock characteristics rocks can have cracks that allow the exposure of more surface area to weathering. Strength of the rock affects its ability to resist outside forces and chemical attacks. Affects the exposure to water, amount of thermal expansion. Dry areas will lead to less weathering, while more precipitation will result in the opposite temperature will also affect weathering. Higher temp + more rain = strong chemical weathering. Exposure of the land has affect on weathering. Steeper slope allows for less exposure to weathring, while flat land allows more, and basins allow even more topography. Shape of the land can affect what type of weathering an area is subject to. Ex. a mountain can cast a shadow, causing cooler air on one side which can lead to more rainfall. Can inhibit or reduce weathering, or could actually enhance weathering.
