Document Summary
The kingdom protista represents an unusual mix of organisms. There is a clear difference between protista and prokaryotes but not that big of a cutoff from the eukaryotes. The organisms found in this kingdom are all eukaryotes and most are single-celled for most of their life-cycle. Since the organisms of the kingdom protista are eukaryotic cells, they are clearly different from the bacteria and archaea. The differences between the protists and the rest of the eukaryotes are not quite as clear. They arose with a lot of different evolutionary patterns which is why on the evolution tree they have three limbs while the rest of the eukaryotes have one limb. Past classifications of the protists organized them into three general groups based on nutritional methods: break down molecules outside the cellular body to break down for nutrients. Non-classified terms used to describe protists in general.
