These organs filter small molecules and ions out of the blood, return essential ions and nutrients, and collect and excrete substances and cellular waste. Cortex: where urine is formed: distal tubule empties urine into collecting duct. Medulla: marrow of the kidney; contains nephrons, urine also formed here. Renal pelvis: collects urine and conducts into the ureter. Ureters: carry urine to bladder (ureter and bladder are muscular portions of system) The avg. adult bladder can hold a pint of urine.
