This captured energy is converted into the energy that drives almost all processes of life: matter and energy. Matter is anything that takes up space and mass. The physical material of the universe energy is the capacity to do work. Work is the transfer of energy to an object. Energy conversions happen at the cost of useful energy (f. 6. 2) Energy is constantly flowing in from the sun. That is, energy can be transferred between the system and the surroundings. The universe is a closed system and the solar system is almost a closed system. All other closed systems are created in the lab. A closed system is a system which is completely isolated from its surroundings.
