Influences on basal metabolism: body surface area, body composition (muscle vs. fat, gender (males have more muscle, body and environmental temperature. Increases energy expenditure beyond bmr: varies widely among individuals, easily altered, more activity, more energy burned. Lack of activity is one of the major causes of obesity.
