Document Summary

Stress builds up in rocks until it exceeds strength of rock- expressed in rocks between earthquakes. Seismograph- detects vertical and horizontal movement during earthquake. P- compressional, 6-8 km/s, parallel to direction of movement (slinky), also called primary waves (similar to sound waves) S- shear, 4-5 km/s, perpendicular to direction of movement (rope), also called secondary waves, do not pass through liquids. Surface waves- slowest, highest amplitude, decay with depth, elliptical movement, side-to-side. Locating an epicenter: difference between arrival times of p/s waves at recording station= function of distance from epicenter but can"t tell you direction, need atleast 3 stations to determine location of epicenter. Magnitude scales (based on amount of energy released) Richter scale- amount of energy received 100km from epicenter, largest recorded 8. 9, less than m=2 usually not felt by humans, scale is logarithmic so increase 1 unit= 10 times greater shaking, 30 times greater energy.
