Structural functionalism-came from a tradition, 2 main concepts (structure and function) function-sometimes called reason to exist normal state-everything is peaceful (no turmoil). Life is drama, we all play a role in it. Each of us have a different status that connects us to society. Norm applies to everyone in a particular situation (deviance is a violation of the norm)(we all feel pressure to follow the norm) achieved status-earned it(lsu student, wife, father). Ascribed status-given to you (race, gender, age, family). Conflict theory(marx)-says we compete for things in society, looking for power to get limited resources, in constant conflict with each other. Legitimate power and authority-we all accept legitimate power. Power-ability to control a persons behavior against their own will(abusive husband).
