Course description: aaas 2000 is an introduction to the study of africa and its diaspora in the americas. The course seeks to help students understand the complex history and culture of people of african descent as well as the political and educational institutions that shape and extend from their experiences. The approach to these subjects is both topical and theoretical. Emphasis is placed on the complementary nature of different disciplines as well as learning how the same, or similar, issues can be treated in different ways based on the disciplinary perspective brought to bear upon them. Required readings survey literary, sociological, psychological, political, and educational texts. Course objectives: this course is to help students understand the complex history and culture of people of african descent as well as the political and religious institutions that shape and extend from their experiences.
