NURS 3350 Chapter Notes - Chapter 21: Stridor, Nebulizer, Accessory Muscle
Document Summary
Administration of oxygen greater than 21% (the concentration of oxygen in room air) The goal of oxygen therapy is to provide adequate transport of oxygen in the blood, to decrease the work of breathing, and to reduce stress on the myocardium. A change in rr or pattern is the earliest indicator for oxygen therapy. Hypoxemia= decrease in arterial oxygen tension (pao2) in the blood. Manifested by changes in mental status such as impaired judgement, agitation, confusion. Also manifested with dyspnea, increase in bp, dysrhythmias, diaphoresis. Hypoxia= a decrease in oxygen supply to the tissues and cells which can also be caused by problems outside the respiratory system. Given only to increase the arterial oxygen pressure (pao2) Nurse should assess patient frequently for confusion, restlessness, lethargy, diaphoresis, Increased amounts of oxygen may produce toxic effects to the lungs and cns tachycardia, tachypnea, and hypertension. Intermittent or continuous pulse oximetry is used to monitor oxygen levels.
