GEOL 11042 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Himalayas, Jigsaw Puzzle, Oceanic Basin
Document Summary
There"s a variety of events and things that happen on the surface of the earth that appear to be unrelated, but which occur in great numbers over a long period of time. For example, we have earthquakes that occur all the time. Plates are rigid blocks that move relative to one another as plate boundaries either move apart from one another or collide with one another. We will now explore some of the explanations for how this can be interpreted and think about some of the consequences of plate tectonic activity. If earthquakes that form very deep within the earth are plotted in the area of the pacific. Ocean basin, they don"t form a random pattern, but instead form long, linear chains. Earth but follow the same basic plan that we saw with the deep-focus earthquakes. However, notice that there"s a long, linear chain of these earthquakes that also occur within the pacific ocean basin.
