Wrestling and boxing were among the most popular. Men covered themselves in olive oil to show off their muscles and also to make it more difficult for them to wrestle other men (naked i might add) The men often competed in multiple events and the brute strength and stability were valued highly. Manliness/virility and its connection to ar te, agon and honour.
