ANTH 2 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Carl Linnaeus, Cultural Relativism, Color Vision
Document Summary
Way of describing biological variation based on environment. Important in some cultures/ less important in others. There are no genes that are only found in a particular race of people. There is more genetic variation within races than between them. Many race are defined by language, accent, and clothing (ethnicity) Placed the races into a hierarchy: caucasians were the most perfect and closest to original creation; europe, n. africa, western asia (culture bound theory) Other races had moved away and degenerated. Science and biology used to justify cultural superiority and oppression/slavery/colonialism. Not as obvious as in the past, but still very much present. What is structural racism : when racism is an integrated part of society; when social structures act to maintain racial and ethnic inequalities. It is embedded in our language, our attitudes and culture; institutionalized. Judging someone based on what we see. General statements made about a group of people.
