PSYCH 230 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Metacognition, Myelin, Automaticity
Document Summary
Analyzes how humans encode information, manipulate it, monitor it and create ways of handling it. According to siegler 3 mechanisms work together to create change in childrens cognition: Encoding : the process by which information gets into memory. Once a task is automatic it does not take effort to learn. Strategy construction : creation of new procedures for processing information. Use of self modification applying what they already know and modifying it to be used in new situations. Metacognition : cognition about cognition or (cid:360)knowing about knowing(cid:361) Ex. have a strategy to remember something. Caused by breakdown of myelin in the brain. People construct and reconstruct their memories - and they may not be accurate. Schema theory : theory stating that people mold memories to fit information that already exists in their minds. Schemas : mental frameworks that organize concepts and information. We reconstruct the past rather than taking a photo or recording it.
