Tertian triads - chords that are vertical structures built by arranging any combinations of two major or minor thirds above a given note. Triads have provided the harmonic foundation for many periods and styles of music. Thorough knowledge of intervals of major and minor third, and order in which the thirds are arranged above a given note, are two skills that you must posses to write and identify any triad. Three notes of a triad are referred to as root, third, and fifth. If structure is arranged exclusively in thirds, lowest note is the root, and chord is described as root position. Middle note of triad is called third because forms the interval of a third above the root. Uppermost note of the triad is called the fifth as if forms the interval of a fifth above the root of the triad.
