The body: cultural definitions of anatomy and physiology. Body image: the ways that an individual conceptualizes and experiences his or her body, whether consciously or not. Beliefs about optimal size & shape of body, inc clothing and decoration of its surface. Included in this are gestures and body language, posture. Some parts of body are considered to be more vulnerable than others. Ex. one catches cold if you go out into rain without cap on (head) People make artificial changes to body due to social influences. Women will get nose-jobs, or other surgeries based on society"s view of beauty. Male circumcision (most widespread form of bodily mutilation) In the us, women are pressured to be thin, while in parts of central africa, plump and fair women are seen as wealthy and fertile.
