Document Summary

Solution: homogeneous mixture of two or more substances, consists of a solvent and one or more solutes. Aqueous solutions: solutions in which water is the solvent. Solutions can be classified by the amount of solute dissolved relative to the maximum amount that can be dissolved: saturated solution. One that contains the maximum amount of solute that will dissolve in a solvent at a specific temperature: solubility. Amount of solute dissolved in a given volume of a saturated solution. Refers to a specific solute, specific solvent, and a specific temperature: unsaturated solution. One that contains less solute than it has the capacity to dissolve: supersaturated solution. Contains more dissolved solute than is present in a saturated solution. Intermolecular forces that hold molecules together in liquids and solids play a central role in the solution process: when solute dissolves in the solvent, molecules of the solute disperse through the solvent.
