Scientific method: set of guidelines all scientists must follow when experimenting, includes, concise verbal or mathematical statement of a reliable relationship between phenomena. Hypothesis: tentative explanation for their observations, experiments are used to test hypotheses, can be revised as much as needed. Substance: form of matter that has definite (constant) composition and distinct properties, such as color, common examples: salt (sodium chloride), iron, water, mercury, carbon dioxide, and oxygen smell, and taste. Element: single type of atom, cannot be decomposed into simpler substance(s) Compound: two or more types of atoms, can be decomposed. All substances can, in principle, exist as a solid, a liquid, and a gas. Solid: particles held close together in an orderly fashion with little freedom of motion, solid does not conform to the shape of its container.
