ANTH 1002 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Comadres, Caster Semenya, Bahuchara Mata
Document Summary
Gender studies: research into the cultural construction of masculinity and femininity across cultures as flexible, complex, and historically and culturally constructed categories. Distinguishing between sex and gender: sex: the observable physical differences between male and female, especially biological expressions related to human reproduction. There are three primary factors of determining biological sex. Chromosome patterns: gender: composed of the expectations of thought and behavior that each culture assigns to people of different sexes, sexual dimorphism: the phenotypic differences between males and females of the same species. Men are on average larger and taller while women have better long-term physical endurance. These differences are small compared to other species: biological sex does not determine behavior and therefore gender roles are constructed by cultures. There was a study that showed that in t-ball, boys were treated preferentially. Girls were uncorrected while boys received more playing time: constructing masculinity in a u. s. high school.
