AHS 100 Chapter 10: The Respiratory System- Pulmonology
The main job of the respiratory system is to deliver oxygen to the
blood and carry carbon dioxide away from it. As we inhale, breathing
in, we are taking in oxygen rich air. As air passes through the
respiratory tract, it is cleaned, warmed, and moistened. The air
reaches its end point in the lungs, where it comes in contact with the
blood. There oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide. Finally the
waste air passes back out through the nose and mouth (exhale).
10.1: Word Parts of the Respiratory System
Upper Respiratory system
Adenoid: adenoid/o
Tonsil: tonsil/o
Nose: nas/o, rhin/o
Palate: palat/o
Mouth: or/o
larynx(voice box): laryng/o
pharynx(throat): pharyng/o
trachea(windpipe): trache/o
The entry point for air into the body is primarily through the
nose, with some air entering through the mouth. The nose
serves to warm, clean, and moisten the air. The nose consists
of two nostrils(nares), a septum, and tube- shaped cartilage
inside the nose(turbinates). The nose is very vascular, it
contains many blood vessels, which is why the nose tends to
bleed easily. The blood in these vessels warms the air as it
enters the rest of the respiratory tract. In addition, multiple
hairs line the nose and filter out dust and other particles.
Finally the nose produces mucus, which helps clean and
moisten the air.
The air passes through the nose or mouth and proceeds into
the throat(pharynx). There are three parts to the pharynx: the
nasopharynx, the oropharynx, and laryngopharynx. The
laryngopharynx contains the vocal cords (larynx). When air
passes across the cords upon exhalation, the cords vibrate at
certain speeds. These vibrations make sounds, which we use to
form speech. The air continues down the windpipe(trachea).
The trachea is surrounded by bumpy rings of cartilage that
prevents it from caving in.
