Chapter 4: The Musculoskeletal System- Orthopedics
4.1: Word Parts of the Musculoskeletal System
Bones: bones start as cartilage. Blood vessels penetrate the
cartilage and bone cells begin the process of replacing the cartilage
model with actual bone. This process begins well before we are born
and does not finish until puberty ends. Many bones harden from the
center outward. Some bones grow at special growth centers-
epiphyseal plate, it lies between the metaphysis area between the
end of the bone and the shaft of the bone.
Physis- growth
The skeleton: bones in the middle of the skeleton: axial
Skull is attached to the spine
The spine is made of many smaller bones that connect
together(vertebra). They protect your spinal cord
Spine has four sections: the neck(cervical), chest/upper
section(thoracic), and lower back(lumbar/sacral). The ribs
attach to the vertebra of the thoracic section.
Arms and legs brach off both sides of the central part of
skeleton.
Upper arm(brachio) leads to the two bones of the
forearm(radius/ulna) then to the wrist(carpe), and
fingers(phalanges).
Legs begin with your thigh(femur), work down to the two shin
bones(tibia/fibula), and move to the ankle(tarsal) and reach the
toes (phalanges).
Osteo- bone
crani/o-head, skull
cervic/o-neck
spondyl/o- vertebra
lumb/o- loin, lower back
brachi/o- arm
tars/o- ankle
dactyl/o- finger
carp/o-wrist
cost/o- rib
femor/o- femur
tibi/o- tibia
