PSYC 2101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: David Buss, Reciprocal Liking, Physical Attractiveness
Document Summary
Close relationships arouse intense feelings that are both positive and negative. This is referred to as the paradox of close relationships. Proximity-we are more likely to become involved with people we are geographically and spatially close to. Familiarity-the mere exposure effect states positive feelings toward a person are increased the more often we see them. Physical attractiveness plays a key role in face to face relationships as well as friendships. Research shows it is not the most important factor though. Kindness and intelligence were ranked higher for both genders. Women: baby faced features such as large eyes and small nose. Women: average weight, hourglass figure, medium sized breast. Expressive traits include large smile, high set eyebrows are are seen as attractive and friendly. Grooming quality are desirable and include cosmetics and enhancements. Matching hypothesis proposes that people of similar physical attractiveness gravitate toward each other.
