The original constitution of the us, ratified in 1781, which was replaced by the us constitution in 1789. Freedom petitions/freedom suits legal way of slaves to gain freedom in the new world. Gradual emancipation in the middle states slaves can get their freedom but it takes years usually 27 to 30 years from birth (freeing slaves slowly) Manumission laws in the upper south slave owners could choose to let their slaves free or not. Congress would appoint official to a territory to adopt a legal code and appoint local magistrates to administer justice. When the male population of a territory reached voting age and landowning statues (50 acres) reached 5,000, the territory could elect its own legislature and send a nonvoting delegate to congress.
