Africa south of the sahara is poorer more rural and its population much younger demographically. It is the fastest growing region with 950 million. Unity is honed on similar livelihood and shared colonial experience. No common religion, language, philosophy or political system ever united this region. Saharan africa is largest landmass straddling the equator and is referred to as the plateau continent. Relatively poor soils, widespread disease and vulnerable to drought. Major river systems include the congo, niger, nile and zambezi. Rain forest like the iturbi in congo basin rains all year and has hot humid temps. Commercial logging and clearing has degraded west and south fringes of the rain forest.
