BIOL 2107K Chapter Notes - Chapter .: Cloning, Phenylalanine Hydroxylase, Microtubule
Document Summary
Stem cell unit 3 biology 2107 spring 2016 gpc. Stems cells are unspecialized cells that can both reproduce itself and differentiate into specialized cells. (have the ability to regenerate into damaged tissue) They are unassigned or immature capable of becoming something else. Have the most flexibility in terms of regulation of genes. There are 3 possible sources of stem cells to use for transplants: bone marrow (from you or someone else, the bloodstream (peripheral blood from you or someone else, umbilical cord blood from newborns. Location: animal cells: brain, heart, & muscles. There are 2 types: embryonic and adult. Can be grown easily in a culture dish. Thought to be limited to differentiating into different cell types of their tissue of origin. Rare in mature tissues so isolating these cells from an adult tissue is challenging. Can become all cell types of the body because they are all pluripotent (capable of differentiating into many different cell types).
