71 views6 pages

Document Summary

Atoms can combine to form larger molecules and compounds. Gases: neither have shape nor volume, easily compressible , does not have surface, highly dispersed/ spread-out. Pure substance: made up entirely of atoms/molecules, cannot be physically separated. Compound = combines more than 1 elements, can be broken down into smaller elements. Element = only 1 type of atom, cannot be chemically broken down into smaller atoms. Heterogeneous = non-uniform consistency, compounds in the mixture are not equally dispersed/ spread- out. Properties: characteristics that give each substance a unique identity. Physical properties = can described by our senses, include odor, texture, color and shape, mass, volume, melting point, boiling point, density. Chemical properties = traits or characteristics that can be expressed after a change in chemical composition has occurred. Physical changes = transformations that do not involve a change in chemical composition, can undone (reversible); melting, freezing, condensation, evaporation. Chemical changes = change in chemical composition.
