PHYS 2211 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Bowling Ball, Egotism, Sandpaper
Document Summary
Six basic concepts: object egotism ~ objects respond to interactions they feel at instant they feel them. Inertia ~ all effects being equal state of object is constant velocity. Thought experiment 1: block on a table: block sits on table strike it quickly with hammer (blocks jumps forward then stops) If we extend experiment by placing soapy water or sandpaper on table, the same hit from the hammer will cause different reactions different changes in position. Thought experiment 2: bowling ball and hammer: bowling ball contacts table at small point which supposedly reduces effect of table. All outside effects on an object being equal, the object maintains its velocity (including direction). The velocity could be zero, which would mean the object is at rest. Every change in velocity an object experiences is caused by object interacting with some other object. Models of motion: object egotism our models will talk about objects.
