What Is A Healthy Weight and Why Is Maintaining It Important?
o Healthy weight ~ body weight in relationship to your height that does not increase risk of
developing any weight related health problems or diseases
o Weight management ~ maintain your weight within healthy range
o Overweight ~ carrying extra weight on your body in relation to your height; clinically
defined as having BMI of 25 to 29.9
o Obesity ~ carry excessive amount of body fat above level of being overweight; clinically
defined as having BMI of 30 or higher
o Underweight ~ weighing less than is healthy for your height; clinically defined as having
BMI below 18.5
How Do You Know If You’re at a Healthy Weight?
BMI Measurement Can Provide A General Guideline
o Body mass index (BMI) ~ calculation of your weight in relationship to your height; BMI
between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered healthy
BMI = weight (pounds) * 703 / height squared (inches^2)
o Measure Your Body Fat and Its Location
Central obesity ~ excess storage of visceral fat in abdominal area, which
increases risk of heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension
Visceral fat ~ fat stored in abdominal area
Subcutaneous fat ~ fat located under skin
