Document Summary

Chapter 3 development and genetic bases of behavior. Interactive theory of development ~ suggests that development of behavioral traits or any other traits requires both genetic information and environmental inputs. Genetic differences can also cause behavioral differences. Imprinting ~ development of ability to learn; depends on specialized features of brain, which in turn arise developmentally through interplay between genes and key elements of animal"s social environment. Evo-devo approach to understanding behavior: although changes in base sequences of genes are clearly important in evolution of certain differences among species, another category of change may often be even more important. Role of social environment: password hypothesis ~ passwords are species specific vocal signals; may be involved in ontogeny of species recognition in brood parasites. If protein is actually made, which requires interaction between gene and its environment, protein may influence development or operation of specific physiological mechanisms underlying organism"s ability to recognize something as food.
