BIOL 4401 Chapter Notes - Chapter all: Linear Map, Standard Deviation, Categorical Variable
Document Summary
Available data- data that were produced in the past for some other purpose but that may help answer a present question. Observational study- observe and measure variables without influencing response. Experiment- deliberately do something to individuals in order to observe responses. Individuals- objects described by a set of data, may be people, animals, or things. Variable- any characteristic of an individual; can take different values for different individuals. Categorical variable- places individual into one of several groups. Quantitative variable- takes numerical values to which arithmetic can be applied. Distribution- tells what value the variable takes and how often. Stemplot- gives quick picture of the shape of a distribution while including actual numerical values. Examining a distribution- overall pattern, deviations, shape, center, spread. Outlier- individual value that falls outside the overall pattern {q1-(1. 5xiqr) ; q3+(1. 5xiqr)} Time plot- plots each observation against the time at which it was measured. Quartiles- most commonly used percentage other than the median.
