Document Summary

There are many different definitions of evolution it is a descent with modification; a transformation of species through time, including both changes that occur within species, as well as the origin of new species. Transformation ~ older terms for what later (post 1860) became known as evolution, or descent with modification. Natural selection is one process that can cause evolutionary change, but natural selection can occur without producing evolutionary change: conversely, processes other than natral selection can lead to evolution. Mutation, genetic drift, and immigration of individuals with different genetic constitutions can cause change in genetic makeup of population. Evolution: more than changes in the gene pool. Gene frequencies ~ frequencies of different alleles of gene: populations hold more genetic variation than assumed. We were able to see where two species diverged by comparing their genetic codes by identifying positions of functional gene. Fossil record documents both major and minor transitions in history of life.
