Document Summary

In plants, stem cells are located in meristems. Meristems are present in embryos and adults, and produce the stems, roots, leaves, flowers, and other structures that develop throughout a pla(cid:374)t"s life. In animals, stem cells exist in specific locations in the body. In adults, stem cells proliferate to replace skin, blood, and gut cells that die; repair wounds; and create a constant supply of disease-fighting cells in the immune system. Cell-cell interactions: the(cid:455) e(cid:374)gage i(cid:374) (cid:862)(cid:272)o(cid:374)versatio(cid:374)s(cid:863) with their neighbors through a diverse set of chemical signals. This ongoing communication drives most of the cellular behaviors that are the foundation of development. Cell differentiation: as development progresses, most cells undergo differentiation the process of becoming a specialized type of cell, the process of differentiation can sometimes be reversed. For example, some plant cells (cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:862)de-differe(cid:374)tiate(cid:863) after the(cid:455) have (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e spe(cid:272)ialized. Cell movement and cell expansion: many animal cells have to move to new locations for normal development to occur.
