I believe the key difference between darwin and wallace"s ideas about organic variation lies in their respective conceptions and approaches about what organic variation is for. This belief that there must be something it is for feels like something that has its roots in religion, but that may be my own bias showing through. Regardless, in contrast darwin does not state that organic variation is, or should be, for anything. You could also say that wallace seems to want to personify a natural phenomenon, whereas darwin takes it away entirely from any sort of personification or active consciousness.
