Document Summary

Questions: dunnell & review day: discuss and critique the contribution to our study of the darwinian evolution of culture made by dunnell"s ideas about the scale at which selection is operating. He wants to be moving away from progressive evolution and yet here he appears to be describing a cultural evolution" along the same lines (though it is of course possible that i"m just misunderstanding him here). Additionally i feel that his over preoccupation with the individual, or rather the role the individual plays in the perpetuation of complex cultures is incorrect based on our study of the. Once the culture becomes sufficiently complex an individual can no longer carry the entirety of the culture with them and thus maintain an active role in it"s selection and perpetuation. Focused on groups rather than the individual as far as cultural selection in more complex cultures goes.
