ANTH 316 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Aleut, Stout, Human Ecology
Document Summary
Principally to get an understanding in a human ecology perspective we need to know both the physical characteristic of the aleut people as well as their environment thus that"s what"s discussed first and foremost in this case study. Live on the aleutian islands in the arctic coast culture region (i think) Reliance on the marine resources around the islands more than anything else. Lines between aleuts and another group, koniang eskimos gets blurred. Mongoloid, relatively short and stout it seems. The aleutian islands number over a hundred in total. Different clusters of aleutians in different parts of the islands are specialized based on regional shifts to the environment. Like other arctic cultures hunting is big thing both sustainability wise and culture/ritual wise. As such there are many forms of hunting, kayak, over land, etc. They train their children for this from a young age. The child training is very ritualized and done in relatively the same way over generations.
