PSYCH 101 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Social Learning Theory, Heritability, Extraversion And Introversion
Document Summary
Thus far it has been established through research and various studies that genetics do influence criminal or antisocial behavior. Researchers agree on the point that genes influence personality traits and disorders, such as the ones just mentioned. However, researchers also agree that there is an environmental component that needs to be examined. Environmental influences such as family and peers will be discussed, as well as a look into the social learning theory. The family environment is critical to the upbringing of a child and if problems exist then the child is most likely to suffer the consequences. We have seen the problems associated with a child who is diagnosed with adhd and how that can influence antisocial or criminal behavior. In relation to that, some researchers have claimed that it is the family environment that influences the hyperactivity of children (schmitz, 2003). The researchers in this article specifically identify family risk factors as poverty, education, parenting practices, and family structure.
