Document Summary

Chapter 6: making war and republican governments, 1776-1789. Patriots controlled most local governments, and therefore had an edge in the battle for the hearts and minds or ordinary men and women: the trials of war, 1776-1778. Few inspiring american victories kept the american rebellion alive: war in the north. Americans were militarily and economically weaker than the british. To take advantage of military invasion, lord north assembled a large scale military invasion under the command of general william howe. Christmas night 1776, washington led troops across delaware river and staged a surprise attack on trenton new jersey, forcing the surrender of 1,000 german. Early january 1777, continental army won a small victory at nearby princeton: armies and strategies. General howe had opposed the coercive acts of 1774 and hoped for a political compromise. Howe wanted to show military superiority and convince continental congress to surrender. The continental army was poorly supplied and faintly praised: victory at saratoga.
