PSY-2012 Chapter Notes - Chapter ch 2 : Naturalistic Observation, Participant Observation, Scientific Method
Document Summary
Definitions that specify how concepts will be observed and measured in a study. Observational methods are used to collect information to be used in other types of studies (correlational and experimental) Once data has been collected, statistical techniques can be applied to predict when the behavior will take place again. To determine cause effect, it is necessary to conduct experimental research. Record naturally observing behavior in a real-life situation (not a laboratory) Ideally the subjects are not aware that they are being observed. Gather a limited amount of information from many people. Often, but not always, in the form of a questionnaire. The group the researcher wants to learn about. The subset of the population who participate in the survey. The sample should be representative of the population. Everyone in the population has an equal chance of being selected. Often difficult, but best for ensuring a representative sample. Focus on a single case, usually an individual.
