CLP-4143 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Classical Conditioning, Behaviour Therapy, Albert Bandura
Document Summary
Although understanding the causes of abnormal behavior is a desirable goal, it is enormously di cult to achieve because human behavior is so complex. In trying to understand what causes di erent kinds of psychopathology, an important rst step is to observe what variables are associated with such outcomes. Correlate: a variable (x) that is associated w/ an outcome of interest (y) Just knowing that 2 things are correlated does not mean one caused the other. Risk factor: if, and only if, x is shown to precede y in time, x is considered a risk factor for y; a factor or characteristic that is associated w/ an increased risk in developing y. Variable risk factor: if x can be changed. Fixed risk factor: if x cannot be changed. Designs that are needed to establish a risk factor are longitudinal design. The key question for causality is whether changing x leads to a change in y.
