Document Summary

Chapter 13: psychotherapy- phenomenological and humanistic existential perspectives. Client centered therapy: this was created under carl rogers, anchored in phenomenological theory. This led to people relying more on self-report. This is respecting the client as a human being: congruence: another word for genuineness. Expressing the true behaviors, feelings, and attitudes that the therapist feels during the therapy: focus more on attitudes and values than specific methods, the process: don"t use reassurance or interpretation. Reassurance doesn"t have to be blatantly shared, but rather can be expressed through tone of voice, word choice, and facial expressions. Giving interpretations is avoided b/c implies therapist knows what"s best. (expertise) Focus is placing responsibility for progress on client and not therapist. Humanistic-existence movement: humanistic perspective: people use free choice in pursuing their inner potential and actualization. Emphasis on positive striving, self-actualization, freedom, and naturalness: existential therapy: sees people as engaged in a search for meaning. This happens through imagination, symbolization, and judgement.
