PHI-2010 Chapter Notes - Chapter -: Meletus, Omnipotence
Document Summary
This is a speech socrates makes in a trial in which he is charged with not recognizing the gods recognized by the state, inventing new deities (demons), and corrupting the youth of athens. In this speech, socrates attends to defend himself, not apologize for what he has done. He claims to speak with honesty and directness. He explains his behavior began from a prophecy by the oracle at delphi that claimed he was the wisest men of all. Basically, he was wiser in the fact that he knew, he knew nothing compared to others who claimed to know everything. Socrates claimed he consider his duty to expose the false wisdom of those who believed or were supposed to be the wisest. This caused admiration among the youth, but hatred from the people he embarrassed. Meletus is the primary responsible for bringing socrates before the jury. He"s found guilty and he"s ask to propose a penalty for himself.
