It uncovered a heavy reliance on the third degree. The third degree refers to the employment of methods which inlict sufering, physical or mental, upon a person in order to obtain informaion about a crime . Depriving suspects of food and water was also a popular course. In some instances, the police would have a doctor examine the prisoner to determine how much more torture the suspect could endure.
