Invention of the penitentiary: enlightenment: a movement during the eighteenth century in england and france in which concepts of liberalism, rationalism, equality, and individualism dominated social and political thinking. Main driving force behind american revolution and laid the foundation for american values. Public response lead to the penitentiary act of 1779 which created a house of labor where offenders worked for two years that was based on: Abolition of the fees charged offenders for their food. At night prisoners were in individual cells and during the day they had to work silently in common rooms (offered penitence and repentance) Penitentiary: an institution intended to punish criminals by isolating them from society and from one another so they can reflect on their past misdeed, repent, and reform. Reform in the united states: 1776-1830 saw a new revolution based on english reforms; reflected many ideas represented in the declaration of independence (optimistic view of human nature and individual perfectibility)
