CCJ-2020 Chapter 16: Ch. 16 -- Reentry
Document Summary
Limited period of supervision where an offender either moves to full freedom or goes back to prison for a new crime or violating parole. Factors contributing to reentry problem: parole boards have been widely abolished or restricted. Inmates are just released even if they arent ready. Little to no prerelease planning (jobs, place to stay, support system: budget cuts resulting in fewer education, job training, and treatment programs, changes to profile of returning prisoners. More have been in jail for long periods of time meaning they have less support outside. Successful reentry requires: support services linking offenders with community institutions, more likely to succeed in job market if they have experience before prison, relationships with employers in prison, and family relationships. Communities share the responsibility of successful reentry. Grace- prisoners could be kept incarcerated but the government extends the privilege of release.
