BSC 1086C Chapter Notes - Chapter 18: Medulla Oblongata, Cranial Nerves, Midbrain
Document Summary
Identify the major regions of the brain and explain their functions. Organization of the neural tissue in the brain. Collection of neuronal cell bodies in the cns. Cortex-collection of neuron cell bodies in the surface of the cns. Nuclei-collection of neuron cell bodies in the interior of the cns. Bundles of myelinated axons (nerve fibers) within the cns. Deep to the gray matter of the cortex. Adult brains have six major regions: * blue= brainstem. Medulla (medulla oblongata): makes the link between our spinal cord and the brain regions. Cerebral hemispheres form superior part of brain. Hemispheres consist of lobes, central sulcus, lateral sulcus, insula, parieto-occipital sulcus. Parietal lobe : conscious perception of touch, pressure, vibration, pain, temperature, and taste. Temporal lobe : conscious perception of auditory and olfactory stimuli/deep is the insula. Each hemisphere is concerned with contralateral (opposite) side of body. Conscious behavior involves entire cortex in one way or another.
