Weakness: gene data are entirely correlative and may not be related to direct function of sleep: energy conservation - sleep has evolved to reduce energy demands. Sleep -- reduce energy expenditure and foraging when they cannot exploit the environment. Nrem -- "hypometabolic" -- involves lower metabolic cost than being awake. Adenosine -- linked to sleep induction; builds up as energy used while active. Sleep not greatly reducing overall energy expenditure though. Most vulnerable when asleep, esp rem when paralyzed: brain efficiency -- sleep has evolved for the consolidation of learning and memory. Sleep to consolidate specific neuronal networks when there is sufficient energy and minimal extraneous neural interference and noise. Sleep req for short-term memory processing, and strengthening long-term memory (changes in plasticity and consolidation of neuronal circuitry) Theory relates only to those species with a complex brain.
