BIOL 142 Chapter Notes - Chapter 15-16: Immune System, Red Pulp, Macrophage
Document Summary
The thoracic duct is much larger and receives lymph from the rest of the body. It collects lymph from the two large lumbar trunks that drain the lower limbs and from the intestinal trunk that drains the digestive organs. As the thoracic duct runs superiority, it receives lymphatic drainage from the left side of the thorax, the left upper limb and the left side of the head. Each terminal duct empties its lymph into the venous circulation at the junction of the internal jugular vein and subclavian vein on its own side of the body. Trace the pathway of lymph from the interstitial space to the left and right subclavian veins. Two types of lymphocytes produced in red bone marrow. The thymus is found in the inferior neck and extends into the supper ok thorax, where it partially overlies the heart deep to the sternum. The thymus has important functions primarily during the early years of life.
