Stressors cannot be avoided, they must be handled: cope- learning to managed the stress in everyday life by alleviating it with emotional of behavioral methods. Typically used when there is some control of the situation. Emotion-focused coping- reaching out for others for support and comfort. Typically used when you believe a situation cannot be changed. Learned helplessness- created by a series of uncontrollable events that creates feelings of passive resignation: having control of a situation tends to make people more alert, active and happy. External locus of control- the perception that chance controls fate. Internal locus of control- the belief that you have control of your own destiny: depleting and strengthening self-control. Self-control- the ability to control impulses to have a better result in the long-term: weakens after use. Strengthens after rest: grows stronger every time it is uses, optimism vs. Pessimism: outlook influences how we cope with stress.
